Quilting...

I love hand quilting though it takes time. The result is what I really look for! It gives life to the top.

Here are a few pictures of my progress on Yoko Saito's basket. I still have three sides to quilt and I will be ready for the finishing process! Finally!!!! Yes, I'm a bit long ....

Do you want to see what tools I use for quilting ?

It is a very relaxing process. I do not use a hoop for small pieces! I use a weight instead.

I was taught how to quilt like this by Reiko Kato and Yoko Saito.

What is, I think, most important in the quilting process is the basting part! The 3 layers (top, batting and backing) really need to be well basted.

Here is my quilt top just basted and ready to be hand quilted :

I wish you a wonderful week and thank you for your very nice comments ;-)

Next post will be about a beautiful exhibition of traditional quilts inspired by antique quilts from different museums. Lovers of traditional quilting, hand-sewing and hand-quilting, do not miss the post!!! The quilts are breathtaking!

Edit for Jenny: The weight is used to maintain the top when quilting. It is used because the piece is too small for being placed in a hoop. You can then pull on the top and have the tension you want. Here on this video, you can see Yoko Saito showing us how to quilt. In this demo, she has only one single fabric (not a three-layer top) in order for us to see the ceramic thimble under the fabric. The weight has a handle. It's a different weight from mine but is used the same way. Hope it makes things clearer...

Until later,

  3. Hi Bertie and Handmade,
Thank you both for your comments.
The blue rubber thimbles are great! One is put on my right forefinger, it prevents the finger from slipping when pulling the needle. The other one is for my left forefinger and the ceramic thimble goes on top! So whatever the size of the finger, the ceramic thimble fits perfectly and does not slip. Thanks to this ceramic thimble, I can make very small and regular stitches.

  11. Your work is really great David, congrats ! I do not use as many thimbles as you but I love this weight too. It is also very useful for borders on larger quilts.

  12. Bonsoir David,

    Bon week end

  17. Hi David!

Thank you so much for saying Hi! Nice to meet someone else in the Yoko Saito fan club. ;)

I am so in love with your frog basket. It looks incredible. I've never attempted anything like that, but you're very inspiring. (I even have a few metres of that trees fabric in my stash!)

Yes, Yoko is pretty amazing. I also got to meet Reiko last year. She gave a small talk at Quilt Market. So interesting to learn about the Japanese approach to fabric color.

Thanks again for saying Hi. It is so nice to comment with people around the world who share the same passions. :)

    Happy quilting!
