Sunburst One-Block Quilt

How about some traditional modernity to start the new year ?

Do you remember this block I made in class with Kathy Doughty from Material Obsession when she came at Pour L'Amour Du Fil quiltshow in Nantes ?

It was for me the opportunity to try get out of my comfort zone and also to finally test long-stitch handquilting with perle cotton.... The stitches are  not that big though!!! Believe it or not, it is difficult for me to make big stitches!

Here is the result :

I made a big mistake on the label and wrote January 2013. I guess I am not used  at writing 2014 yet... it will stay like that as I realized it too late!

Here is the quilt on the wall.

Until later,

  1. I have tried big stitching also and I feel as though my stitches aren't big enough - I have been hand quilting for many years and it takes awhile to learn to take bigger not to try for smaller

  2. What a lovely block, great fabric choices. I have recently finished a quilt for my daughter which was partly machine quilted and partly handquilted with big stitches (I used DMC perle 8) and I loved it! I loved doing it and I love the way it looks. I was happy to be making the big stitches, so much easier to see and easier on my hands. I never once drew blood and hurt myself, which I always do when I do traditional handquilting in a hoop (my middle finger of my left hand ...). Love that pattern, saw it before on Petra Prins' blog, am still contemplating making it some day....

Bravo..

  6. My stitches are always big :-) not that I want them to be, but I am struggling to make small even stitches and pick up enough fabric at the back... How do you manage to do such fine work?! It is beautiful, David...

    1. Thanks! Actually, I don't know how I quilt with little stitches!! It seems I cannot manage to make bigger stitches... I know, it's crazy...
I guess the more you quilt, the better you become at quilting ;-)
